The short answer, maybe, probably… The question is, how do we get rid of what’s already in our systems. Well, for starters, you can put down that tuna sandwich…. Unfortunately, the mercury found in tuna and many types of seafood is being linked to a whole host of disorders, from ALS, and MS to autism, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, obesity and even depression. Not to mention that tuna and many other fish stocks throughout the world are being devastated by overfishing.
Some doctors and researchers believe that most of us have a toxic burden of mercury in our systems that has gotten into our bodies via the air we breathe (from coal burning plants), through drinking water, fish, dental fillings, and vaccines. Even our homes can be ongoing reservoirs as it can also be found in fluorescent light bulbs, thermostats, batteries, red tattoo dye and contact lens fluid.
Dr Michael Greger put together this little video comparison between the amount of mercury you consume in a can of tuna vs the amount you receive daily from your dental fillings. He did this by first averaging the mercury content found in three national brands of canned tuna. They averaged 600 ppb of mercury, (100ppb more than what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s deems a safe level for human consumption by the way…). The typical amount of tuna in a can is roughly 170 grams (about 6oz), which comes out to be about 100 mcg (micrograms) of mercury per can of tuna. He then estimated the amount of mercury we’re exposed to on a daily basis per amalgam-filled tooth which is 0.5 mcg. Obviously simple comparisons like this, don’t tell the whole story so I’d encourage you to read two Huffington Post articles by Dr. Mark Hyman here and here. Now, I always take anything celebrity doctors like Hyman, Oz and Mercola say and write with a very large grain of salt, but I found these two articles full of pretty sound advice and wish I had read them a few years ago when I had my mercury fillings removed (FYI, I would have detoxed properly). He states clearly that one can remove mercury from your system and includes a section on preparing for detoxification including proper testing protocol and the detox procedure itself. Here’s an excerpt from one of the articles on prepping for the detox that I thought was good health advice in general (and I’m no doctor but, I’d throw in 30 minutes of walking everyday):
Step 1: Getting Ready for Detoxification
This process can take a few months, and I can’t stress enough how important this preparation step is. It is accomplished by optimizing your nutritional status and detoxifying ability. Once this is done you will begin mobilizing and binding the metals in your body and excreting them through your urine, bile, stool, and sweat.
Here is what I recommend to my patients.
2. Optimize your nutritional status for detoxification. Use healthy fats (omega-3 fats, olive oil, and flax oil), amino acids (which boost all your liver’s detoxification capacity), and minerals, particularly zinc and selenium (which help your body detoxify metals).
3. Enhance your liver’s detoxification pathways. Take folate and vitamins B12 and B6 and eating sulfur-containing foods such as broccoli, collards, kale, daikon radish, garlic, onions, and omega-3 eggs.
4. Start sauna therapy. Make sure you take adequate electrolyte and mineral replacements to prevent dehydration and mineral loss from the sweat.
5. Optimize elimination routes for metals including your urine, stool, and sweat. Use fluids, fiber, and saunas.
Aaand finally, just to scary the wits out of you, here’s a video showing mercury vapor off-gassing out of a 25 year-old tooth. Between the tuna video and this creepy off-gassing jawbone and tooth video, I think I’ll stick to organic sprouted lentils for awhile… As always, I encourage you to read, think and decide for yourself.
