(TRFW News) You’ve heard the common saying, “An apple a day may keep a doctor away!” While that may be true, new research uncovers evidence that a variety of green tart apples can help build healthy gut bacteria in the colon, especially in obese individuals.
Importance of healthy gut bacteria
Generally apples are healthy choices to munch on due to their high volumes of non-digestible compounds that such as dietary fiber and polyphenols. They also contain low levels of carbohydrates compared to other fruits. All of this is good for the gut health. (1)
During the digestive process, the non-digestible compounds remain intact until it reaches the colon and then existing bacteria in the colon ferment it. This process aids in the process of developing friendly bacteria in the gut. (1)
Since gut bacteria is needed for optimal health, researchers wanted to find out how to reduce incidences related to obesity such as diabetes or other metabolic disorders. (1,2)
Granny Smith apples rank the top of all apples
A study published in the journal Food Chemistry, a group of researchers led by Washington State University looked at these apple varieties: Granny Smith, Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, and Red Delicious. (2,3)
The team evaluated the different apple varieties to see if one is more superior to the other. Turns out that Granny Smith apples topped them all, or more closely the green varieties. (2,3)
The study’s leader, Giuliana Noratto, explained that the non-digestible compounds containing in Granny Smith apples did, in fact, change the type and amounts of fecal bacteria found in obese mice. The team also discovered that the bacterial communities in the colon of obese mice differ from the skinnier mice. (1,2,3)
Making conscious choices in eating habits
Obesity is rising at an alarming rate. In fact, about two-thirds of Americans are obese and at risk of obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Most of these conditions can be preventable. (4)
Noratto and the team hopes that this study helps consumers to make more conscious choices in the food they eat, especially in the apple varieties. She says, “What determines the balance of bacteria in our colon is the food we consume. Re-establishing a healthy balance of bacteria in the colon stabilizes metabolic processes that influence inflammation and the sensation of feeling satisfied, or satiety.” (2)
