“If you have a dream, you have to believe in yourself. Otherwise, you cannot do it.” It’s easy to make excuses about learning a new trade or taking up a hobby when obstacles stand in your way, but the fact of the matter is, nothing is impossible if you are determined to succeed.
One such individual who has proven this to be true is Derek Rabelo. It is reported that before Derek was born, his father had high ambitions for him to be a surfer. After all, the athlete was named after Derek Ho, the first Hawaiian world surfing champion.
Upon entering this world, however, it was discovered that Rabelo was blind, as he had been born with glaucoma. His father tucked the dream of his son becoming a surfer away. At age 17 (now 23), though, Derek learned of his father’s desire for him and decided to take up the sport.
The movie Beyond Sight highlights the Brazilian surfer’s story and explains the ups and downs he experienced on his journey. Now a professional athlete, he inspires individuals from all around the globe – not just other surfers.
Derek told Bored Panda: “Firstly, my dad encouraged and helped me. We went to the ocean together in the mornings. However, he sent me to a surf course to learn and practise more. I have also practised a lot with my friends. They always consider me just as themselves. I listen to the ocean and feel it.
And every single part of a wave makes different noises. So, I can decide which side of the wave I should surf towards. If you have a dream, you have to believe in yourself. Otherwise, you can not do it. I believe all of us have strong senses given by god. Use them with passion and perseverance.”
