Struggling to lose weight? It’s not your fault. It’s because, there’s a helluva lot of conflicting information out there. One minute, grass-fed meats and butter are good for you and the next, you are reading about vegan elite athletes like Rich Roll and 70+ year old vegans that seem to defy age. And, let’s not forget about Dr. Terry Wahls who was wheelchair bound and declining rapidly from Multiple Sclerosis and who’s now fully recovered and back to lecturing and researching, all due to a Paleo style diet that includes lots of leafy greens and grass-fed red meat!
Confused? I sure was, that is until, I met Dr. Michael Greger and started sifting through his expansive website. Dr. G is different. He actually has the research studies to back up what he’s talking about and even though he doesn’t have some miracle weight loss formula to hawk, he’s not deadly boring. He’s funny, engaging and he breaks down the research so anyone can understand even the most complex studies. Do I agree with everything he says? Nope, I’m still on the fence about whether to go vegan even though, he makes a very, very compelling case, based upon solid scientific research, as to why everyone should be vegan–immediately.
As for the ethical argument, a friend of mine said it best: “just don’t eat anything that poops” because you can’t be completely sure of the source and in today’s world, farming produces unhealthy food, fosters antibiotic resistance and is damaging to the environment. Factory farming is incomprehensibly cruel with even free-range, organic farms coming under fire for mistreatment of animals. And, even if these animals are humanly raised, we rarely have any idea whether they were humanly dispatched before being neatly packaged for our comfort. Unless we visit the farm, we also have no proof the animals were fed a non-soy, non-GMO diet despite being “grass-fed,” as often, these farmed animals are grain fed just before slaughter. And there’s ample evidence that fish stocks throughout the world are being devastated by overfishing, and are being poisoned by mercury and radiation.
I started a plant-based diet (though I still eat eggs) about a month ago and dropped 10lbs without a whole lot of effort by drinking green smoothies, eating salads, homemade guacamole and veggie burgers or scrambled eggs for dinner (check my smoothie recipe here). I also now drink tons of filtered water daily. On the weekends, I chug a green detox drink (recipe here).
Have a look at Dr. Greger’s video. It’s a loooong one but it’s funny and fascinating and, even though I read tons of health-related material everyday, my mind was blown. If you really want to dig deep, read his article on nutrients and weight management (and the accompanying linked articles at the end of the article) and watch his short video, eliminating the number 1 cause of death.

Novella Carpenter’s book: Farm City. Novella and her boyfriend make a go of living off the land in the poorest, most crime-ridden area of Oakland, CA. Their poverty forces them to come up with creative ways to grow their own food. It’s full of compassion and humor but plantcentric people should be advised that she does raise, kill, and eat her own farm animals. However, in this age of corporatism, I believe that the power to grow your own food is something worth exploring so I’d encourage everyone to read this moving memoir.
