In a “Super Size Me” 30-day style experiment, lean, healthy and fit 50-year old George Prior forced himself to drink 10 Cokes a day, adding up to 300 sodas in one month. A staggering number, especially considering that, drinking just one 12-oz can of soda per day can increase your risk of dying from heart disease by nearly one-third. What happens to a body when you drink 10x more than that single, potentially fatal 12-oz can (an additional 1 and 1/2 CUPS of sugar daily)?
Turns out, bad things happen. Within 30 days, the Los Angeles resident gained 23 pounds going from, 168lbs to 192lbs! His body fat rose 65%, going from a healthy 9 to 16%. His normal blood sugar readings of 129/77 went up to a far less healthy, 143/96 and he also fought cravings for sugary foods. Think you don’t eat as much sugar as what’s found in 10 cokes? Think again, sugar is everywhere and, according the the USDA, the average American consumes 156lbs a year! I found his before and after photos particularly frightening. His weight gain is everywhere but especially pronounced in his belly and he look likes he’s aged 10 years! See his blog for more photos and insight.
You are probably thinking, “no problem, I don’t drink soda.” Or, “I only drink a few sodas a day.” Ah, but sugar is in nearly all processed food and drink. And, Prior responds to this common delusion we all share, on his blog that documents the month-long ordeal: “… if you add in the two glasses of orange juice, the two sweetened coffee drinks from Starbucks, the 16 ounce Odwalla drink, the two ‘healthy’ brand ice teas, and the $9 fruit smoothie you waited ten minutes in line for, you’ve made my ten Cokes look like child’s play. Maybe it’s not all Coke, but they’re all sugar drinks, and a big percentage of Americans drink at least the sugar equivalent of my ten Cokes,” he explained.
On Prior’s first Coca-Cola-free day, he shot a video to show his physical and mental state and you can clearly see he feels decidedly unhealthy (and obviously, really crappy) and is already looking forward to dropping the weight he gained. Though Prior shortened the time frame to 30 days, imagine what 30 years of ingesting sugar and high-fructose corn syrup does to your health! I hope this article encourages you to try your own little experiment: quit eating and drinking sugar for 30 days and see what happens!
