Cats were worshiped by the ancient Egyptians and many these days believe that cats are sentient animals that can sense things that we cannot. A few years ago, I had heard about Oscar, a therapy cat living in the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island, who was the star in a New England Journal of Medicine article by David Dosa, a geriatrician and assistant professor at Brown University. According to Dr. Dosa, Oscar seems able to predict the coming death of terminally ill patients.
So, I wasn’t too surprised to find out that you might be able to connect with your own cat on a deeper level and improve your health at the same time. This 3-step cat meditation is based on a research collaboration with the Institute of HeartMath and Stanford University. Their research has shown that using their meditation technique resulted in: “improvements in clinical status… in individuals with hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, asthma and AIDS.”
HeartMath says even one minute of meditation using their methods can benefit you, so don’t hesitate to try this!
1) Sitting with your relaxed and content cat, focus on your heart while breathing. It can help to imagine you are breathing through your heart area.
2) For a few moments, start breathing in for a slow count of 5, and then out for for slow count of 5.
3) While still breathing through your heart space, stop focusing on counting and start focusing on your feline friend. Just “be with” your cat. You may gaze at them, pet them, or just close your eyes and be with their presence–whatever feels natural.
This third and final step is the most important. Quietly appreciating your cat’s presence connects your heart rhythm and breathing rhythms and multiple systems in your body sychronize which leads to lowered stress hormone, improved emotional balance, improved mood, improved health and immunity, and improved cognitive performance and creativity.
