Your next roommate could be a honeybee! It is no secret that honeybees are in trouble as the term “colony collapse” has entered mainstream vocabulary. Now a company called BEEcosystem is making it possible to not only Save the Bees, but LIVE with them, too!
The company was started in 2014 with the goal of designing an extremely user-friendly “observation” beehive you can either mount outside or inside your house. The hives are established in hexagonal honeycomb-styled wooden boxes, or HexHives, with plexiglass viewing covers. People can start with one HexHive and add additional interconnected boxes as the hive expands. As the company describes it, the modular hives grow along with your colony inside!
If you install the HexHive in your home, a clear transfer tube is mounted through an insulated foam block that fits at the bottom of a sliding window so that no holes need to be drilled through walls for the honeybees to travel in and out of their hive. If you mount the hive outside, no transfer tube is needed.
If I setup my BEEcosystem hive indoors, is it secure? Can the bees escape inside? Short answer: Yes and No. Long Answer: Our BEEcosystem hive includes features that make indoor setups more secure than any other observation hive! Bees enter and exit via a plastic tube that funnels the bees outside. This tube fits snuggly into a space in your window, just like an AC unit would sit in your window. BEEcosystem has developed an ingenious way to ensure the honeybees’ circadian rhythms are not disturbed by artificial nighttime lighting within a person’s home by using a light-filtering plexiglass viewing cover that magnetically attaches on/off to protect the natural day-night cycle for the honeybees.
Most beekeepers starting a new hive obtain “package bees” that are bread in California and the southern U.S. and are shipped via the U.S. Postal Service. BEEcosystem recommends that package bees should always be ordered during the winter, so they are delivered from mid-April to early May, depending on climate, when flowers start to bloom in your area. A typical container of package bees weights about three pounds and contains approximately 10,000 workers with a queen traveling in a separate enclosure with several “attendant” workers.
BEEcosystem has developed a Beekeeper Ambassador Program to connect experienced beekeepers with new BEEcosystem hive owners. These ambassadors, or as BEEcosystem calls them “a community of passionate pollinator educators,” can even partner with businesses that want to host hives in their offices and restaurants, but want the hives to be cared for by expert beekeepers.
BEEcosystem says their goal is “to create a platform that will grow over time and involve more and more people in the practice of beekeeping, helping to put more new beehives in public and semi-public spaces, and engaging a new generation of potential future beekeepers.”
Company founders Mike Zaengle and Dustin Betz have started an Indiegogo campaign to expand BEEcosystem’s production and educational initiatives.
