Woman dropped out of Stanford at 19 years of age to transform healthcare
Elizabeth Holmes, 30-years old is now the third youngest billionaire due to her decision to drop out of Stanford at 19 years old and use tuition money to transform healthcare. Due to Holmes’ company, Theranos, a drop of blood can now produce a ton of information in just a few hours and costs far less than current blood test methods! (1)
Holmes viewed current technology, the rising healthcare costs, and developed a system that is now backed by over a dozen patents. Over the past decade her idea was developed and ready for use. Last year, Walgreen’s announced that they would be installing Theranos Wellness Centers in pharmacies throughout the United States. There are current locations already in use in Phoenix and Palo Alto, California. (1)
When explaining the technology behind Theranos, Holmes reported, “We had to develop … methodologies that would make it possible to accelerate results,” she said. “In the case of a virus or bacteria, traditionally tested using a culture, we measure the DNA of the pathogen instead so we can report results much faster.” (1,2)
Holmes reports that this information is what drives 80% of doctors’ clinical decisions and this new method will reduce human error. When Holmes utilized new technology to address the inefficiencies of the current system she was able to revolutionize healthcare. (1)
New technology allows one drop of blood to be used for dozens and consumer will receive results within four hours
New tests can be performed without going to the doctor allowing people to swing by the pharmacy before having a doctors visits take current blood test results to physician. Historically, blood samples could only be used for one test and additional blood was needed for follow-up or additional testing. This new system will allow one drop of blood to be used for dozens of different tests. (1)
The cost of Theranos tests are less than 50% of the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rate, which could save approximately $202 billion over the next decade. (1)
Holmes reports that Theranos charges $35 for fertility tests, if using traditional fertility testing, the out-of-pocket costs could be up to $2,000. Theranos provides a price list online and the prices of what used to be expensive tests are impressive! (2,3)
Within the next year, you can swing by Walgreens and use one drop of blood to help you better understand and improve your health. Holmes explains, “By testing, you can start to understand your body, understand yourself, change your diet, change your lifestyle, and begin to change your life.” (1)
